SUMMARY:Faro Demonstrations at Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park
DESCRIPTION:Sundays through June 2026 (see details for exceptions) 10 a.m. – 1 p.m.\n\nJoin an educational and interactive demonstration of the popular Wild West game of Faro at Tombstone Courthouse. Play along with our engaging and knowledgeable volunteers to learn how to play the most popular gambling game of America’s Wild West heritage. Just be sure to watch your cards carefully; Faro was infamous for cheating dealers and ours are no exception! Play your cards right and you might just walk away with a commemorative America250 Arizona Faro chip in celebration of America’s 250th anniversary on July 4th\, 2026.\n\nDemonstrations are scheduled every Sunday except for May 24 and 31\, and June 14 and 28\, 2026. This activity is free with paid park admission.\n\nThank you to our Faro volunteers: George Howison (1st/3rd Sundays) and Steve Kokx (2nd/4th Sundays). Please note that Faro demonstrations are for educational purposes only; betting of real money is not permitted. America250 Arizona faro chips are available while supplies last.\n\nFaro History\n\nThis card-based gambling game was played in almost every single gambling hall across the American West for roughly 90 years of our country’s history. Faro was so popular that it could be played in 150 places in Washington D.C. during the American Civil War. As the country expanded westward\, people brought their love of Faro with them. In 1882\, as construction began on what would become Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park\, a study by the New York Police Gazette estimated that Faro was more popular than all other forms of gambling combined. Here in the historic town of Tombstone\, Arizona\, where the Wild West lives on\, Faro could be found in just about every saloon\, great or small. Soon after arriving in Tombstone\, frontier lawman Wyatt Earp dealt Faro for a short time at the Oriental Saloon.

SUMMARY:America 250: Light the Park Red\, White\, and Blue Night Hike
DESCRIPTION:Help us celebrate America’s 250th birthday in style! Wear your craziest family friendly red\, white\, and blue or American flag clothes for a special night hike through the park with colored flashlights! Bring your own light and we’ll provide the colored film! UV lights to look for scorpions are welcome too! Not only will we be looking for nocturnal critters that call the park home\, we’ll be discussing some of the many ways in which Arizona has contributed to the richness of American history. \nWe’ll start with a sunset hike on the Noso and Blevins trails – 2 miles on easy-rated trails with only slight and gradual (100 feet) elevation change. Terrain is gravelly with small rocks underfoot. Then we’ll go on the Vista trail (rocky and narrower\, somewhat steep 162 ft elevation gain) to a hilltop vantage point to admire the sweeping views and watch the horizon for fireworks! \nBring sturdy close-toed shoes\, water\, sun protection\, and flashlights (please refrain from using headlamps). Please have $10 cash per vehicle or your annual Maricopa County Parks pass for the entry fee and plan to arrive a few minutes early to stop at the entry gate\, find the trailhead\, and check in with the ranger. No pets please. \nMEETING LOCATION: Trailhead staging area\, in front of the restroom building \nPrecise meeting location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/fRwkbzCN3Bp7122T9 \nLimit 50 participants. To register\, please call the Nature Center at (602) 506-2930 ext. 4 with your name\, phone number and number of people attending. If you find you cannot attend a program after you have registered\, please call the Nature Center ASAP so we may contact those on the waiting list. Registration for this program will close on 07/02/2026. \nPLEASE NOTE: Outdoor summer programs may be canceled on short notice due to severe weather\, including extreme heat events. SUMMARY:America 250: Stars and Stripes (Limit 50 Participants)
DESCRIPTION:Join Ranger Kevin and Ranger Steve for a very special evening of summer stargazing in commemoration of America’s 250th birthday! \nClear skies permitting\, we’ll be viewing a selection of objects through a large\, stationary telescope (and one that has a place in America’s space history as part of the program to map the moon’s potential landing sites for the Apollo moon missions). We will be focusing on stars and searching for the stripe that marks the path of the Milky Way across the summer sky. We’ll also seek out things like planets\, galaxies\, nebulae\, and star clusters! In honor of America 250\, we’ll be hearing about the important contributions made through our history by astronomers in Arizona. Bring your sky-related questions! Family friendly program. \nPlease note: Due to the increased chance of nighttime cloud cover during monsoon season\, if skies are too cloudy to permit stargazing\, we will instead head out for an evening walk on the Honeymoon Cove trail and look for nocturnal critters like scorpions\, tarantulas\, and various birds\, reptiles and mammals. Please bring a flashlight and water\, and please wear sturdy\, closed-toe shoes in case we have to change programs. \nRestrooms and water are available at the meeting location. NO pets\, please. \nMEETING LOCATION: Desert Outdoor Center \nPrecise Meeting Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/HW61wifZZPD4pKpB6 \nLimit 50 participants.
