SUMMARY:America 250: Blue Flower Moonrise over the Desert (Registration Required\, Limit 25 )
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate two and a half centuries of the American spirit (America 250) under the glow of the Blue Flower Moon. This 2-mile hike is rated easy and features an elevation gain of under 200 feet. We start with a nature walk on the Tortoise trail\, stopping to learn about the Sonoran Desert along the way. Then\, we climb the short Hilltop trail (approximately 0.5 miles) for a spectacular view of the moon rising over the Mazatzal Mountains. Please wear sturdy\, closed-toe shoes\, bring plenty of water\, and a handheld flashlight (please refrain from using headlamps). This program is weather-dependent. Please allow 15 minutes upon park arrival to use the self-pay station and reach the trailhead\, which is a few miles past the park entry.\n\nMEETING LOCATION: Trailhead Staging Area by the restroom building\n\nPrecise Meeting Location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/XWzDLPnBLGGQDh9z6\n\nLimit 25 participants. SUMMARY:Moonlight Hikes at Red Rock
DESCRIPTION:May 30 | June 28 | July 28 | Aug. 28 | Sept. 26\, 2026 Time varies\n\nThe Moonlight Hike is among the most popular interpretive hikes at Red Rock State Park. Led by a naturalist\, it gives hikers the rare opportunity to enjoy the sunset and moonrise from an overlook and return by the light of the moon\, while also having the chance to learn about Sedona and its surrounding areas. Verde Valley and park history\, as well as archaeology\, geology\, botany\, and riparian wildlife information\, is also offered by a knowledgeable guide.\n\nRegistration is required for this program. Registration opens one month before the event date; see the schedule below. Registration can be completed online (search by location) or by phone at 877-MY-PARKS (877-697-2757). The program cost is $20 per attendee. While we do our best not to cancel hikes\, at times\, inclement weather can result in cancellation (registration fees will be refunded if canceled).\n\nTwo routes are available for this guided hike: a 2-mile and a 2.5-mile option. You may select which route you prefer during registration. And what was happening in what’s now Arizona while a war for independence was raging in the east?\n\nDr. Hays-Gilpin is the Edward Bridge Danson\, Jr. Chair of Anthropology at the Museum of Northern Arizona (MNA) and also Professor of Anthropology at NAU. She holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Arizona and has nearly 40 years of experience studying rock art\, pottery and other visual arts in the Southwest.\n\n\nSpace is limited. For two and a half centuries\, the diverse landscapes of America have provided sanctuary for hundreds of bird species that have shaped our cultural and natural heritage. Join Ranger Jacque for an engaging indoor presentation designed to take the mystery out of identifying the feathered residents of the Sonoran Desert. We will discuss the basics of bird identification by sight and sound\, what tools you need to get started\, and the incredible migrations that have remained a constant through the American story. This program is perfect for newly interested birders who want to learn how to identify the most common local birds with the help of apps and other resources. It is recommended you download and register for Merlin\, the free birding ID app developed by Cornell\, before coming to the park as wi-fi is spotty. Feel free to bring your lunch and enjoy learning in a relaxed\, cool setting. Bring your binoculars if you have them to briefly practice birdwatching in the shade of the back patio after the program. We will walk along the Metate Trail\, identifying native plants that have served as vital food and medicinal sources for generations of inhabitants. This 2-mile out and back is rated as easy to moderate\, featuring mostly level terrain with some rocky sections and sandy washes. The guide will also touch on ideas of other cultures that likely have made use of the park’s resources.
