DESCRIPTION:Cool off in the air-conditioned Nature Center for this special America 250 Lunch n’ Learn. For two and a half centuries\, the diverse landscapes of America have provided sanctuary for hundreds of bird species that have shaped our cultural and natural heritage. We will discuss the basics of bird identification by sight and sound\, what tools you need to get started\, and the incredible migrations that have remained a constant through the American story. This program is perfect for newly interested birders who want to learn how to identify the most common local birds with the help of apps and other resources. It is recommended you download and register for Merlin\, the free birding ID app developed by Cornell\, before coming to the park as wi-fi is spotty. Feel free to bring your lunch and enjoy learning in a relaxed\, cool setting. Bring your binoculars if you have them to briefly practice birdwatching in the shade of the back patio after the program. Restrooms and water are available at the Nature Center.\n\nMEETING LOCATION: Nature Center\n\nNo registration required.

SUMMARY:America 250: Desert Reptiles
DESCRIPTION:Escape the midday heat and head into the air-conditioned Nature Center for this special America 250 Lunch n’ Learn! From the Gadsden “Don’t Tread on Me” flag to Harry Potter’s “Slytherin” and other Hollywood folklore\, our nation’s relationship with serpents has been marked by both deep reverence and intense fear. In this engaging presentation\, Ranger Jacque will let the scales of justice weigh the truth behind these attitudes—and you be the judge! As we honor 250 years of American history\, we will also explore the broader role of animals as American symbols and dive into the fascinating biology of our local desert residents. Did you know that more lives have actually been saved by snake-derived medical research than have been lost to snake encounters? This program is designed for nature lovers of all ages. Feel free to bring your lunch and enjoy this deep dive into the reptiles of the desert. Restrooms and water are available at the Nature Center.\n\nMEETING LOCATION: Nature Center\n\nNo registration required.

SUMMARY:Sharlot M. Hall Statue Dedication & Free Day at Sharlot Hall Museum
DESCRIPTION:An extraordinary new bronze statue depicting Sharlot M. Hall\, one of Arizona’s most revered pioneers\, will soon grace the beautiful rose garden at the Sharlot Hall Museum. Created by award-winning Prescott-based sculptor Heather Johnson Beary\, the nearly seven-foot-tall statue is slated for installation this fall and will celebrate Hall’s enduring legacy as a poet\, storyteller\, and historian.\n\nBeary was selected by George Fuller\, a former board member of the museum and long-time supporter\, who commissioned the sculpture. Fuller’s generous donation to fund the creation of the statue was described by the museum’s Executive Director\, Stuart Rosebrook\, as a historic gift.\n\n“We are beyond grateful to be receiving this remarkable gift to the museum\,” said Rosebrook. “It will be only the second statue of this style in the area depicting a person from our recent past\, other than the Ernest A. Love statue at the Prescott Regional Airport. This is a historic moment for our area and\, of course\, for the museum. We are so grateful to George for this marvelous gift.”\n\nThe statue portrays Hall around 1940\, standing confidently in a split skirt\, binoculars in hand\, and her poetry book held close to her chest. At her feet\, elements of the high desert come to life with a cactus\, pine\, and horned toad\, paying homage to her poetry and to Arizona’s rich natural heritage. With a caring expression and a knowing smile\, the sculpture captures Hall’s pioneering spirit and her lasting impact on the state.\n\n“I have wanted to create a Sharlot statue for about 25 years\, and to now have the opportunity is amazing\,” said Beary. “She is such a role model to so many people\, especially to me\, with her incredible pioneering spirit and the fact that she always spoke her mind.”\n\nKnown for her extraordinary talent and meticulous detail\, Beary has created monumental bronze sculptures showcased around the world\, from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport to Zion National Park\, and in the collections of Richard Branson. Her passion for the Southwest—its landscapes\, history\, and stories—deeply informs her work\, making her an ideal artist to honor Sharlot M. Hall’s enduring legacy.

SUMMARY:Founding Values: Protections for the Digital Age
DESCRIPTION:Advances in artificial intelligence present new opportunities to strengthen democratic representation rather than weaken it. This talk explores how AI tools can be used to better inform the public\, more effectively gather and interpret public input\, and communicate citizens’ priorities to democratic representative bodies. By examining emerging mechanisms for large-scale civic feedback\, deliberation\, and policy communication\, the discussion considers how digital technologies—when thoughtfully designed and governed—can enhance political representation\, public understanding\, and democratic responsiveness in the digital age.\n\nFounding Values is an event series designed for ASU and the surrounding community to distance ourselves from partisan politics and reflect on the values represented in the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution.\n\nThe semiquincentennial\, the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding\, offers us a unique and timely opportunity to ask if we are upholding those values\, and what we can do as a community to protect those values—if we think that they ought to be protected.

They knew we had an undiscovered treasure in the diversity of habitats within the Verde Valley\, as well as great birding in Dead Horse Ranch State Park.\n\nThis event is part of Outdoors250\, a celebration of America’s 250th anniversary and Arizona’s natural heritage.
