SUMMARY:Women of Americana A Celebration of American Music: From Joan Baez and Bonnie Raitt to Alison Krauss and Brandi Carlile
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a heartfelt celebration of early folk\, gospel\, and Western swing music. This isn’t just a multi-media concert—it’s an exuberant exploration of this expansive and singular American genre that planted the roots of American music featuring vocalists and instrumentalists Cristina Vane and Brennen Leigh. The performance includes songs made famous by iconic artists like Brandi Carlile\, Emmy Lou Harris\, Alison Krauss\, Dolly Parton and more. Titles like “Blowin’ In The Wind” (Joan Baez)\,“Angel From Montgomery” (Bonnie Raitt)\, “Car Wheels On A Gravel Road” (Lucinda Williams)\, “Can The Circle Be Unbroken” (The Carter Family)\, and more.\n\nFeatured artist Cristina Vane\, a singer-songwriter\, slide guitar\, and clawhammer banjo player\, is a product of merging numerous worlds. Vane ingeniously blends her heavier roots in classic rock and 90s indie\, with her passion for pre-war blues\, old time fiddle banjo music\, country and bluegrass. The concert co-stars Brennen Leigh\, a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist on guitar and mandolin\, who’s to-the-point storytelling style has elevated her to cult icon status.

SUMMARY:Blue Corn Festival
DESCRIPTION:Join Arizona Humanities and NDN Girls Book Club for the second annual Blue Corn Festival! The Blue Corn Festival features local cuisine and traditional blue-corn inspired dishes; poetry readings and storytelling; free books by Indigenous authors; kids’ crafts and activities; and dozens of art and culture vendors.\n\nHonoring History and Foodways\n\nAt the heart of the festival is blue corn\, a crop deeply rooted in the history and lifeways of Indigenous peoples across the Southwest. For generations\, communities including the Navajo\, Hopi\, and Apache have cultivated this drought-tolerant food and incorporated it into ceremony\, cuisine\, and cultural identity. Today\, blue corn remains an essential bridge between the past and present\, carrying forward stories of resilience\, tradition\, and innovation.\n\nOur Mission\n\nThe Blue Corn Festival uplifts Indigenous voices while fostering new conversations about food sovereignty\, cultural continuity\, and shared heritage. By celebrating blue corn and its enduring importance\, the festival inspires hope for the future and strengthens connections between generations within Arizona’s Native communities.\n\nJoin us as we honor tradition\, celebrate creativity\, and build community—one story\, one meal\, and one shared experience at a time.\n\nBy the People: Conversations Beyond 250 is a series of community-driven programs created by humanities councils in collaboration with local partners. The initiative was developed by the Federation of State Humanities Councils and the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage.
