SUMMARY:Founding Values: Citizen Control with General H.R. McMaster
DESCRIPTION:Founding Values is an event series designed for ASU and the surrounding community to distance ourselves from partisan politics and reflect on the values represented in the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution.\n\nThe semiquincentennial\, the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding\, offers us a unique and timely opportunity to ask if we are upholding those values\, and what we can do as a community to protect those values—if we think that they ought to be protected.\n\nThis event will feature a keynote lecture by General McMaster focused on the founding value of civilian control of the military. Following the lecture\, a cadet-moderated conversation will take place\, applying those lessons to today’s civil-military challenges\, including political polarization\, social-media pressures on apolitical service\, the domestic use of forces\, and the citizen-soldier ideal.

SUMMARY:Founding Values: Protections for the Digital Age
DESCRIPTION:Advances in artificial intelligence present new opportunities to strengthen democratic representation rather than weaken it. This talk explores how AI tools can be used to better inform the public\, more effectively gather and interpret public input\, and communicate citizens’ priorities to democratic representative bodies. By examining emerging mechanisms for large-scale civic feedback\, deliberation\, and policy communication\, the discussion considers how digital technologies—when thoughtfully designed and governed—can enhance political representation\, public understanding\, and democratic responsiveness in the digital age.\n\nFounding Values is an event series designed for ASU and the surrounding community to distance ourselves from partisan politics and reflect on the values represented in the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution.\n\nThe semiquincentennial\, the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding\, offers us a unique and timely opportunity to ask if we are upholding those values\, and what we can do as a community to protect those values—if we think that they ought to be protected.

SUMMARY:Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival at Dead Horse Ranch State Park
DESCRIPTION:The Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival gives participants the opportunity to experience birding during the peak spring migration season. The four-day festival is held at Dead Horse Ranch State Park on the banks of the Verde River. With close proximity to the Verde\, Oak Creek\, Sycamore Creek and other perennial waters\, festival participants are invited to choose from a wide selection of offerings such as guided tours\, hikes\, and workshops in one of Arizona’s richest birding habitats. Visit the festival website for details and specifics!\n\nThis beloved celebration of birding and nature during peak migration in the Verde Valley began as a celebration of birding at Dead Horse Ranch State Park in 2001. The founders of the festival sought a way to provide a fun and educational birding experience to both the local community and visitors. They knew we had an undiscovered treasure in the diversity of habitats within the Verde Valley\, as well as great birding in Dead Horse Ranch State Park.\n\nThis event is part of Outdoors250\, a celebration of America’s 250th anniversary and Arizona’s natural heritage. By participating in this event\, you can enter to win Outdoors250 prizes by signing up at AZStateParks.com/Outdoors250.

SUMMARY:Author Series – Jim Hinckley
DESCRIPTION:Jim Hinckley’s America is the culmination of a lifelong passion for road trips and the rich\, colorful American story. Founded in 1990 with the encouragement of his wife Judy\, Jim Hinckley turned his natural talent for storytelling into a mission: inspiring people to discover America by the open road. What began with feature articles for a wide range of publications—and a monthly column\, The Independent Thinker\, for Cars & Parts magazine—quickly became a platform for celebrating the unsung heroes of American history\, from automotive innovators like Ralph Teetor to the everyday people who shaped the nation’s journey.\n\nOver time\, that passion expanded into books covering subjects as diverse as the Checker Cab Manufacturing Company\, Route 66\, Southwestern adventures\, and the evolution of American car culture. Together\, the books and articles formed the foundation of Jim Hinckley’s America\, which has since grown into a multifaceted network including a popular website and blog\, international presentations\, a YouTube channel\, an active social media presence\, and Coffee With Jim\, a weekly podcast designated an official Route 66 Centennial program. Along the way\, Jim has shared the road with audiences around the world—from Route 66 festivals in Europe to book signings across the United States—and built lasting friendships along the journey. Jim Hinckley’s America is a shared adventure: smile-inducing\, thought-provoking\, and endlessly inspiring\, all in service of sharing America’s story and showing people where to go.

Family cooks and bakers have favorite recipes. Some may be recent collections\, some handed down from generation to generation. Family gatherings enjoy good food and conversation\, and our family recipes have stories to share. In this program we will share our memories about family recipes and design a cookbook. Please bring paper and pen or a laptop. Ages14 and up. Registration required.

SUMMARY:Founding Values: Freedom of Speech and Press
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Jefferson and James Madison\, founders of the United States\, believed in the importance of freedom of conscience\, which may be connected to freedom to exercise one’s thoughts and beliefs as well as to freedom of speech and press. U.S. Supreme Court opinions subsequently connected freedom of expression to fundamental liberties recognized in the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution. This panel\, which will be a discussion among communication and legal experts\, will explore freedom of speech and press rights in the United States\, how necessary free expression values are to a functioning democracy\, and how we can protect these values.\n\nFounding Values is an event series designed for ASU and the surrounding community to distance ourselves from partisan politics and reflect on the values represented in the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution.\n\nThe semiquincentennial\, the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding\, offers us a unique and timely opportunity to ask if we are upholding those values\, and what we can do as a community to protect those values—if we think that they ought to be protected.
